Say hello to moon Europa: Watch the video: Our Moon Isn't the Only Moon.
Watch the video: Europa Clipper to find out three things that life needs in order to exist, and why NASA thinks Europa may be habitable for life.
In science, there are seven superpowers or skills that scientists need to do well. The first is "asking questions" which we will start exploring today.
At the end of the lesson, you will brainstorm a few questions you have about Europa and living things.
The video Asking Scientific Questions helps you start.
The word phenomena means things in nature that can be observed that are unusual or difficult to explain.
The best scientific questions are:
Measurable: by direct observation or scientific tools
Comparative: by studying the relationship between phenomena
Testable: by seeing if the evidence supports the hypothesis or claim
It takes time to build up to a good science question. To start with, brainstorm questions like these kids are doing with this NASA scientist.
In this course we will learn how to turn questions into testable scientific claims and hypotheses. For example, the question about what Europa tastes like is a good one. NASA is sending the Clipper to answer a similar one in a more scientific way: what life-supporting chemicals can the Europa Clipper "sniff" in its atmosphere?
