Osmosis and diffusion move small molecules in and out of cells, modeled by the egg.
Moving large molecules in and out takes a different approach, pinching in or out the membrane.
Our immune system white blood cells catch germs using endocytosis. Endo means "in" and cytosis means moving a large substance into the cell across the membrane.Â
Our salivary glands in our mouth produce saliva by releasing digestive enzymes. The enzymes come out of the salivary gland cells by exocytosis. Exo means "out" and moving large molecules out of the cell in an exact reverse of endocytosis. Small microbes "poop" waste by exocytosis.
