Gardeners that want to save water may plant xerophytic plants. Xerophytic plants are drought-tolerant with beautiful flowers and are not cactuses. They often come from the chaparral areas around the world. Kangaroo paw from Australia, Ceanothus lilacs from California, and Salvia sage from the Mediterranean.
California chaparral, South Africa feinbos, Western Chile maparo, and Western Australia mallee all have xerophytic plants. Some biologists call these areas the Chaparral Biome, others prefer their local names.
Calflora is a comprehensive visual web site of all plants in California.
You can narrow down your search by inputting terms, such as your County (Ventura), the community (Chaparral), and the type of plant (native). However, the chaparral designation is narrow and may miss some plants that live there.
Ceanothus is a common chaparral bush with blue or white scented flowers that is adapted to fires. It is pretty enough to be cultivated and sold in nurseries worldwide.
