Capstone Project: Engineering Meets Science
Engineers work with scientists to solve everyday problems in our environment. Engineers focus on the "criteria" and "constraints". Biologists focus on the concepts that connect the organisms together.
The goals or criteria are to increase biodiversity by planting native species and removing invasive plants, and by removing invasive insects.
The limit or constraint is the budget which is set at $20,000. The cost of each plant, plant removal, or insect removal is included in the activity handout.
Using the map made for your local area in "Map Your Eco-Home" from the first lesson in this unit make a plan to increase the diversity and ecosystem services for your home, park or wilderness area.
Make sure you include a removal plan for at least one invasive species detailed in the last lesson.
Use what you have learned about wild and invasive species, ecosystems, and population interactions detailed in this Ecosystem unit.
Present this to a family member.
